In the First Week of December, the 18th-century Home Opens its Doors to Montvale Residents who Want to Experience a Victorian Christmas.

The Hopper-Goetschius House is part of the national register of historic places and was built on the corner of Lake Street in 1739. The museum opens up during the summer and for a week in December so that residents and tourists can experience one of the oldest buildings in New Jersey. Have you ever been driving down a road and see those homes all boarded up; you probably think there's nothing to it right, get some plywood,  screws and you're all set. However there is actually more to it; first off let's talk about some reasons to board up your property:

Water Damage and How it Relates to Mold

So picture this!

You come home and heard the sound of water pouring but you don't know where it is coming from since it is not raining. So you run down to your to your basement and it is raining; IN YOUR BASEMENT!!  After you get over your initial shock you call SERVPRO of EAST CENTRAL MORRIS COUNTY and let us get to work. Here are a few things that you need to know about Mold that could make this situation go from bad to worse.(If you did not call the professionals to handle it of course lol)

Mold is a type of Fungi and it can be found everywhere, prolonged exposure to excessive moisture enables microbes to flourish. If a water damaged environment is not promptly and properly restored many environmental microbes such as odor causing bacteria and fungi will colonize, grow, and amplify on building materials.

It is highly recommended that persons responsible for the restoration of water damaged environments understand how water damage promotes microbial growth. 

There are 5 growing conditions that are requirements for mold growth. Altering or removing one or more of these conditions best obtains effective elimination and/or prevention of mold. 

1. ORGANIC FOOD SOURCE
   • Most fungi grows best while feeding on organic materials, they cannot manufacture their own food and must feed on products like wood, carpet backing, dust, lint etc
2. Moisture
   • The most critical requirement for fungal growth is moisture. It is essential for the metabolic activities of Fungi. Spore remain dormant when materials are dry and humidity is below 60%. 
3. Stagnant Air 
   • Mold does not grow well where there is good air ventilation.
4. Temperature
   • The most optimal teperature for fungi to grow is between 68 degrees F to 86 degrees F
5. Darkness
   • Mold grows best in total darkness; exposure to light will retard its growth and allow for more complete treatment

Although it is not storm season yet spring can bring some serious headaches when it comes to weather. The constant High Winds, melting snow, heavy rains, saturated ground etc.. can all equate to problems as a home owner. So here are a few helpful tips to be proactive rather than reactive; however if you have to be reactive make sure to react by calling SERVPRO of EAST CENTRAL MORRIS COUNTY ;)

1. Make sure your sump pump is working, it will be working overtime with the ground saturated with rain and melting snow so keep an eye on it.
2. Check the trees around your property for damage, large broken limbs are just waiting for gusty winds to help it come crashing down on your fence or roof
3. Inspect your house for damage to the roof, siding, exterior foundation walls. 
4. Check for animal nests, Over the winter wild animals may have invited themselves to stay in your warm cozy property. Entry holes near eaves or close to ground, drilling sites by birds or insects, chew marks on wood or wiring, or shredded building materials around the foundation. Check your attic and crawl spaces for animal droppings
5. Seal up leaks. Inspect the sealant around your windows, doors, and places where utility pipes enter the exterior walls of your house. If it is cracked or shrinking, use a urethane-based caulk to seal cracks and prevent water intrusion.

Did you know that something as simple as clogged gutters can cause major damage in your home. Now that winter is almost over and Spring is coming it is important to check your gutters. 1. In colder climates, ice dams can form on the gutters or the lower edge of the roof, causing water to pool and eventually seep into the home. While ice dams can form on homes with clean gutters, clogged gutters prevent water from draining, which increases the chance for ice dams.

2. The fascia boards that hold the gutter system are often made of wood. When gutters clog and fill with water, the boards start to deteriorate and rot. If a home has wood siding, clogged gutters can also cause water to overflow out of the gutter system and down the sides of the home.

3. The main role of a gutter system is to channel water off the roof and away from the home's foundation. •  Clean Water is from broken pipes or other water sources or rainwater. 
• Gray Water which is slightly contaminated water. Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants to begin growing which makes it hazardous. 
• Black Water is highly contaminated and is filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals etc...Black water is typically caused by sewage or any type of natural disaster. Black water should always be handled by the trained professionals of SERVPRO of East Central Morris County.

• Shut off water source if possible
• Turn off circuit breakers only if there is safe access to the breaker & do not enter rooms with standing water

Get to know some of the common causes of water damage so that you can do what you can to prevent it from happening on your property. 

1. Broken Pipes – A broken pipe can do a lot of damage to your home in just a short amount of time. Before you know it, gallons short amount of time. There are several steps you can take to prepare your business for rainy season and possible flooding, and these preventive measures will reduce the amount of flood damage your business sustains and the time it takes to bring your operations back to normal.

• MAINTAIN GUTTERS: Well-maintained gutter systems divert water to proper drainage areas. If your gutters are clogged with debris such as dirt and dead leaves, rainwater will overflow and saturate the ground around the foundations causing damage there while backed-up water can spill into wall structures.
